Backgammon: history

The backgammon game is the oldest existing table games recorded. There are indications of a game practiced with stones and bones in the old Mesopotamia, approximately in the year 3,000 A.C.

It´s introduced in Europe by the Persians and it extends quickly, mainly between the nobility and the aristocracy.

Although it was a basically similar game, the different cultures practice it over the centuries with certain variables and different names. In Egypt it´s known like “Senat”, “Tabula” for the Romans or “Tavli” in Greece, among others.

The name of “Backgammon” asign it in century XVII, derived from the words “back” and “game” by the possibility that the checkers have to return to table after to be "eaten”.

The game rules by which it is known at present were introduced in 1743 by Edmun Hoyle. In 1920 appeared the concept of the bets in the game with the purpose to make agile it.
